Young researchers from the 2019/2021 class of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Scholarship Program visited Monaco this week. The project initiated by the IPCC is jointly funded by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the Cuomo Foundation. While meeting with their sponsors and updating them with their research projects, the PhD students also attended a special reception co-organised by the IPCC and the FPA2. During this ceremony, held at Monaco Oceanographic Museum on September 19, the international students were officially granted the coveted scholarship.
The events took place amid the IPCC’s 51st Session held from 20-23 September 2019 in the Principality. The IPCC is currently in its sixth assessment cycle during which the Panel will produce its Sixth Assessment Report (AR6). The Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (SROCC) is to be presented in Monaco during the summit.
The Intergovernmental panel for Climate Change was established in 1988 in order to build capacity to understand and address climate change. Its advisory body consists of a group of independent and international scientists. The first IPCC awards were first granted in 2011. The Cuomo Foundation joined the scholarship program in 2013. With the 2019/21 group, the number of young researchers supported by the Foundation rise up to 16.
