On May 29, the President of the Cuomo Foundation, Maria Elena Cuomo, visited the Accademia Nazionale di Danza (AND) in Rome. The visit was part of the partnership in effect since March 2019 which links our philanthropic organization to the Italian higher education establishment. Mrs Cuomo was received in Rome by the Director Enrica Palmieri and other members of the teaching staff, accompanied by some representatives of the student council.
The National Dance Academy is a prestigious institution assimilated to the Italian university system and placed under the supervision of the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research. The Academy was officially established in 1948 by legislative decree, transforming a structure founded 8 years earlier by the Russian dancer Jia Ruskaja. The school was then affiliated to the Accademia Nazionale d’Arte Drammatica. Today, the institution has four departments covering the disciplines of Classical Dance, Contemporary Dance, Choreography and Teaching. The university offers the first two standardized diplomas of the European Higher Education System, namely, the License and Master degrees. The wish of the Director, Enrica Palmieri, is also to introduce, in the coming years, the third cycle of studies: one that validates doctoral degrees.

Very much turned toward international and cultural exchanges to aim excellence, the Academy benefits from numerous partnerships signed with international institutions. They add up to the flexibility already offered by the European “Erasmus” exchange program. Thus, in addition to the Academy students who travel abroad and those who arrive from other countries to train in Rome for a year or two, many international professors and choreographers visit the academy each year to exchange and share their experience with the apprentice dancers from Rome.
Enjoying an exceptional architectural setting that combines ancient elements with ultra-modern studios, the Accademia, located on the heights of the Aventino district overlooking the Circus Maximus, is a true idyll dedicated to dance.
The first phase of the support granted to the AND focuses on setting up the dance competition entitled “Premio Roma Danza”. Held with the collaboration of an international jury comprising choreographers, performers and dance critics, the competition alternates each year a dance competition with a season dedicated to choreographic creation. The support of the Foundation will finance all the individual prizes of Premio Roma Danza 2019.
