On January 15, Duong Tran Anh, Foundation Scholar, successfully defended his thesis in Munich. Affiliated to the Institute of Water and Environment of Technische Universität München (Germany), the young researcher from Vietnam conducted his research under the supervision of Professor Peter Rutschmann. The thesis which focuses on soil salinisation of the Mekong Delta, Vietnam, is entitled “An Investigation of The Impact of The Water Level in The Mekong River and Sea Level Rise due to Climate Change on The Tien and Hau River Estuaries“.
Researcher in Meteorology, Hydrology and Climatology, Mr. Duong, 36, is one of the first beneficiaries from the IPCC fellowship program to be supported by the Foundation. After an initial phase of research, undertaken between 2013 and 2015, Mr. Duong asked in 2015 for an extension of the aid in order to complete his study. This special request was then validated by the Foundation, seing the importance of this ambitious project which shed light on a crucial ecological disaster which put in peril the economy and ecosystems of Southern Vietnam.
Researcher in Meteorology, Hydrology and Climatology, Mr. Duong, 36, is one of the first beneficiaries from the IPCC fellowship program to be supported by the Foundation.
Initiated in 2007 and joined by the Cuomo Foundation in 2013, the IPCC Scholarship Program is instrumental in advancing our common knowledge on one of the major issues of our time: climate change. The Foundation’s contribution to this programme has already benefitted 11 young doctoral students, all coming from the Global South and promoting invaluable and rare research projects.
Various scholarship programs, initiated or supported by the Foundation, are currently underway in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. They cover the fields of education, health, culture and vocational training. The beneficiaries of these programs form today a community of several hundred individuals: courageous children, young adults and professionals who have taken advantage of the initiative to empower themselves… Just like Mr. Duong who, after years of research in abroad, joins the Vietnamese-German University (VGU) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. We wish him great success.
