Festivities were held in Sendivakkam (Tamil Nadu, India) on June 22, 2019 to officially celebrate the name change of the school that the Foundation built some 14 years ago in this remote village located 100 km southwest to Chennai. The RC Higher Sec. School is now called Alfredo Cuomo Higher Sec. School. The renaming procedure pays tribute to the late founder of our philanthropic organization according to the will of whom the school compound was built at a time when the village had only a rudimentary primary school.
The name change was ratified on April 12, 2019 by the Tamil Nadu School Director Procedures.
The name change was ratified on April 12, 2019 by the Tamil Nadu School Director Procedures. During the celebrations, the local administration was represented by Mr. G. Selvam, Kancheepuram Parliamentary Representative, Mr. S. Pugazhendi, member of the State Legislative Assembly and Mr. Krishnan, Kancheepuram District’s Education Director. During the ceremony, Rev. Dr. A. Neethinathan, Bishop of Chingleput and Mr. Selvam presented Maria Elena Cuomo, the president of the Cuomo Foundation and visiting from Monaco, with the trophy of “The Best Educationalist” in recognition of the actions the Foundation has initiated in the region. It was also made public that the President of the Cuomo Foundation shall receive an honorary doctorate from the Academy of Ecumenical Indian Theology and Church Administration for her implication in the region. The ceremony was attended by other members of the foundation, church dignitaries, teachers as well as students and their parents.
The event also marked the beginning of the school’s new academic year. Among the novelties of this year is a series of professional teaching units. Conducted by visiting lecturers, these practical courses will cover the fields of computer science, artificial intelligence, music and dance. They are likely to open up invaluable professional opportunities for young pupils. In addition to these activities, another innovative project was launched at Sendivakkam’s Primary School premises: “Maria Mushroom Park”. Especially designed for women from low income families, this is an income-generating initiative supporting local communities.
Alfredo Cuomo Higher Sec. School remains the Foundation’s first and only school to date built entirely as a new school and not as a replacement. Its original construction and the maintenance operations, including teachers’ salaries, are entirely financed by the Foundation. More than ever, this education compound plays today a pivotal role not only in the future of its student, but also within the village community.
