In the southern region of Burkina Faso, in the province of Nahouri, a group of local journalists and citizens have established the ‘Nahouri News’ as an online -only news site. It was launched in June 2020 by Abatidan Casimir Nassara the president of the Dizénidani Association an organisation from the neighbouring province of Tiebele which the Foundation has been in partnership with since 2014.
The immediate success online of this citizen journalism initiative convinced the Foundation to encourage and practically support its future by awarding a financial grant two months after ‘Nahouri News’ was launched. This funding has enabled an office space to be rented and computers and audio-visual equipment to be purchased.
Today, Nahouri News Team consists of 2 fulltime journalists and a secretary in addition to news and community contributions from numerous freelance reporters. The online site aims “to become the new voice of journalism in southern Burkina Faso”. The Foundation applauds the initiative of a young entrepreneur and local citizens in playing an active role in the process of collecting, analysing and reporting news and information for their communities.
